Deep fake of Malaysia's Prime Minister leads investment fraud on Facebook

Wednesday, 21 May, 2025 - 05:19

Yesterday, we reported here on an investment fraud launched in Malaysia. Today, the fraudsters have upped their game with a deep fake video of a purported TV interview with Anwar Ibrahim in which he talks of "guaranteed" returns.

The fraud is pushed via an app that takes users to "shuteranal.com". That contains another fake MalaysiaKini page which, again, contains wild claims and fake endorsements.

But it goes further: in what we can only assume is a fraudulent account purporting to be Malaysia's national broadcaster, RTM, Facebook is hosting a deep fake video purporting to be an interview with Anwar.

It is carefully modulated and has a reasonable representation of his voice and speech mannerisms but there are plenty of signs that it's completely fake.

Meta's Fakebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/100063613762530/posts/24066157982967871/?rdid=…

Pressure to act fast

The fake Prime Minister says that only 100 slots are available to Malaysians, He says that only the first 50 will be motivated to really better themselves. He talks of "we" as if there is direct involvement in the development of what he talks of as algorithms using "AI".

This FakeBook video demonstrates not so much the technology to create it as the failure of Meta, Facebook's parent to take steps to prevent fraud being promoted on its platforms.

And then there is this:

Fake endorsements of fake Anwar's fake investment scheme.

Fake endorsements of fake Anwar's fake investment scheme. And yet, people will believe this rudimentary social engineering of the type Nigel Morris-Cotterill has been warning about since the 1990s.
