Italy's Guarda di Finanza seize 43 million euros in tax fraud investigation

Italy's Financial Police are powerful and forceful. Formed to investigate tax crimes, they take the view that criminal enterprises fall within their purview if tax is not paid on the proceeds of criminal conduct. For decades, that has put them in the front line against corruption, fraud and, of course, money laundering. And when they find money, they tend not to let go. Some time ago, they set their sights on the logistics industry.

The Guarda di Finanza has launched investigations into DHL, FedEx and Amazon and in the latest action, the Italian subsidiary of German logistics group Rhenus has been under detailed scrutiny over allegations of tax evasion and abuses of employment laws.

Basically, the allegations, which in other cases have produced fines exceeding 600 million euros, centre around subcontracted labour and inflated contract costs, so producing a tax benefit. Rhenus is a vast company with tens of thousands of employees and well over 1,000 offices around the world.
