Job hunting: it's not supposed to be like this.

Monday, 23 December, 2024 - 23:29

I recently sat in, hidden, on a remote interview of a highly successful salesman who is finding it difficult to land a new job of sufficient seniority, says Nigel Morris-Cotterill.

It was immediately clear to me why: she terrifies interviewers.

"Can you do.." is met by a list of when and how she's done it in the past.

"Let's talk about MEDDPICC"... is met with resignation bordering on "if you must but really I'd rather sell than fill in endless forms on Salesforce." Apparently, documentation is now more important than getting results.

"It's quite a large territory" is met with "I speak and read the five major languages across that region."

"Why did you apply for this post?" - "Actually, your company contacted me" isn't the correct answer it seems.

"What can you bring to the company?" - "I've taken several new entrants to the territory from zero to multi-million deals on a regular basis. You've got a tiny presence, people ask who you are. I can build your brand and make sales, I can shorten sales cycles and create a strong, sustainable customer base."

Nigel Morris-Cotterill is at www.countermoneylaundering.com and on LinkedIn.

So what happens? One example, which has happened, with slight variations, several times: "We've decided to appoint a middle aged white male who doesn't have your sales success but we think fits our culture better. Thanks for your interest." Another, "we've decided to take someone from a competitor."

Companies say they want diversity, strength and proven performance but when it comes down to it, they really don't.

Data leakage on Mobiles is a rapidly growing threat.

About this section

Opinion pieces or "Op-Eds" are the home-made bombs of the publishing world. So long as they meet editorial standards, are not intentionally offensive with a view to causing hurt or insult and are relevant to our field of endeavour, we will look at submissions.

We like contentious, we like contrarian views. We don't like pretty much any -ism . We recognise that Opinion pieces are one person's view and are not balanced (if they are balanced and reach a reasoned conclusion, they are probably more suited to the Articles section). We do not like acronyms and buzzwords.

Op-Eds are the author's personal views and do not necessarily represent the views of World Money Laundering Report or its publishers.

To submit an Opinion piece, please complete the Contact form.
