Spoofing (i.e. faking) email addresses is one of the internet criminals oldest trick. The second oldest is attaching a credible name to a functioning email account such as gmail, yahoo, yandex: we warned of this in the 1990s and it's still happening. A later version used facebookmail. We've not seen that for a while but like a bad smell, it's back... Below is the email that we received and almost thought was genuine .... than eventually we realised it probably is.

The thing is that FB does send out similar mails. The proof is at the bottom of the mail. If it's sent to the same email address as you have PRIVATELY registered with Facebook as your security address, then the chances are it's real, always assuming that you don't use the same email address for everything.

It is perfectly possible that a third party has been trying to access this account and has asked for an authorisation number.

But equally, we have to be suspicious because the body of the email contains so many errors.

One more step to confirm your account [this account has been extant since 2010. Kinda confirmed, doncha think?]

Hi [account name]

We got a request to confirm your account from someone using Facebook. [who and what has it to do with them. We aren't asking anyone for money or to send us pics, etc).

Enter this code:84539883 [actually, we logged onto FB for that account - no request for any additional info or for that code so now we know it's fake]

Don't share this code with anyone. [haha. Do you have any idea how many people are going to see it now? ]

If someone asks for this codeDon't share this code with anyone, especially if they tell you that they work for Facebook or Meta. [This is getting silly, Really anxious to tell us how important this is.

They may be trying to hack your account. [no shit sherlock}
